The Best Ages for Family Portraits (Hint: It's Probably Right Now)

The answer is simple...

Before your kids grow another inch.

Seriously.

There are a few ages that are especially wonderful for capturing your family's story—and if you're in one of these stages, consider this your friendly nudge.

Ages 5–7
This might just be the golden age for family portraits. They're (mostly) past the terrible twos... and threes. They can follow directions, tell jokes, and their personalities are front and center. They'll happily snuggle with Mom, race Dad across the field, and still think holding your hand is pretty cool.

Ages 10–12
This is the calm before the teenage storm. They're growing like weeds, but they're still kids at heart. Middle school is around the corner, braces may be making their debut, and those teenage years are coming faster than you'd like to admit. Right now, they're old enough to have confidence but young enough to still let you hug them in public (sometimes).

Age 16
Sweet sixteen is a milestone worth celebrating. They're becoming young adults with dreams, independence, and personalities all their own. Whether they've just gotten their driver's license or are counting down to graduation, this season deserves to be remembered.

Age 18
This one tugs at the heart.

Your senior is getting ready to spread their wings. Before long, they'll be packing for college, starting careers, or chasing big adventures. Suddenly, coordinating everyone's schedule becomes harder than solving a Rubik's Cube blindfolded. You're thrilled if everyone makes it to dinner together—family portraits? That's practically an Olympic event.

For many families, this is the last opportunity to capture everyone together before life gets wonderfully busy. The next family portrait session often doesn't happen until college graduation... or a wedding.

Here's the truth no one tells you:

There will always be a reason to wait.

Maybe you want to lose a few pounds.
Maybe you're waiting until braces come off.
Maybe life just feels busy.

But years from now, your children won't look at these portraits and think about crooked teeth, bad haircuts, or the extra ten pounds you worried about.

They'll see home.

They'll remember how it felt to belong, to laugh together, and to be loved.

The best time for family portraits isn't when life is perfect.

It's while life is happening.

I'd love to help you preserve this chapter before it becomes a memory.

Let's create something your family will treasure for generations.
