Helping Older Siblings Adjust to a New Baby

Welcoming a new baby into your family is an exciting and joyful time—but let’s be honest, it can also feel like navigating uncharted waters when it comes to helping your older child adjust.

As a mom myself, I completely understand the mix of emotions this transition can bring. While there may be a few bumps along the way, it can also be a beautiful bonding experience for your growing family.

The key? Preparation—and you’re already taking the first step by reading this! Let’s dive into some specific ways you can help your older child get ready to welcome their new sibling.

Start with Stories
Books are a wonderful way to introduce the idea of becoming a big brother or sister. Stories like "I’m a Big Sister" or "I’m a Big Brother" by Joanna Cole are heartfelt and relatable options. Another great choice is "The New Small Person" by Lauren Child, which addresses the ups and downs of adding a new sibling in a fun, engaging way. Reading together can open up conversations and set positive expectations for what’s to come.

Get Them Involved
As you prepare the nursery, invite your older child to help! Let them pick out a decoration, a special stuffed animal, or even a tiny gift for the baby. Involving them in these preparations can help them feel like an important part of the process—and it builds excitement for the baby’s arrival.

Keep the Conversation Going
Communication is so important, both before and after the baby arrives. Take time to check in with your older child about their feelings. Encourage them to share any worries, questions, or excitement they might have. Acknowledging their emotions and offering reassurance can make a big difference.

Encourage Bonding After Baby Arrives
Once the baby is here, encourage your older child to interact and bond with their new sibling. Simple tasks like helping pick out the baby’s outfit, singing a lullaby, or even just talking to the baby can create a sense of connection. These small moments help your child feel included and valued.

Make Time for One-on-One Moments
With all the changes, it’s natural for your older child to feel a little jealous or unsure. That’s why carving out one-on-one time is so important. Plan a special outing, like a movie night or a quick ice cream date—whatever fits your routine. It doesn’t have to be extravagant; it just has to be intentional. Stick to Routines
While big changes are happening, keeping parts of your older child’s routine consistent can provide comfort and stability. Whether it’s their favorite bedtime story, a morning snuggle, or singing silly songs at dinner, these familiar rituals remind them that not everything is changing.

Every Child is Different
Remember, every child processes change in their own way. Some may adjust quickly, while others might need more time. What matters most is offering love, patience, and understanding as they navigate this new role.

This is such a special time for your family, and capturing those early interactions between siblings can be truly priceless.
